Summer Weeding

Last year when we finally moved all of our items out of
storage and into our house, I discovered just how
many magazine subscriptions I had ~ too many!
In my effort to be more organized in my new office,
I purchased some great magazine storage racks
for the wall and placed them next to one
of my 4 over-sized inspiration boards, within 2 minutes they were full. Now I have stacks of magazines under my drafting table, on my drafting chair, my guest chair,
closet shelves, file cabinet and desk.
If it is a flat surface, chances are there is at least
one magazine or design book gracing it.
When the renewal cards began to arrive, no matter how
much I told myself I would limit this year's number of
subscriptions, I continued to find a need to renew, so each month brings at least 6 new issues into my office.
Thus began my version of Saturday morning weeding,
it's just that my weeding takes place in a chair
as opposed to outside in the garden.
The process begins by picking up 3 or 4 magazines that did not "wow" me enough to keep the entire issue. I then begin
flipping through the pages to see if there is one
last article or item that inspires me, and then I rip it out
(very painful) to add to my "I might be able to use this someday" notebook. Trust me, I will not be around long enough to see all of these ideas come to fruition!
Below are some of the items I came across this morning that I found to be creative, pretty, inspiring or just plain fun. They fit no particular category, just an eclectic
collection of ideas as I flipped through the pages.

Love these unique windows

Tired of same pillow arrangement on your bed?
I personally love the pink and gray bolster.

Hope you enjoyed flipping through the pages with me.
As the weather heats up, why not stay indoors and weed out your own magazine collection. You might find some great ideas for your home and if not, well at least
one more chair might be available for seating
until the next postal delivery.

Happy Saturday, Maggie

Summer Style Out of Africa

Summer has arrived at my house along with
my annual urge to flee the high temperatures!
But since my summer vacation won't take place until
September, I am gathering all of my favorite movies
(black and white of course)
and planning a virtual vacation to escape the heat.
With that thought in mind, I thought, "wouldn't it be fun to create a theater room that was as exotic as the movie sets that take us away from our daily cares!"
My all time favorite movie is Casablanca. I mean really,
the cast (Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman,
Paul Henreid, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains,
Dooley Wilson and Sydney Greenstreet),
the plot, the set, the costumes, how can you go wrong?
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman (looking amazing cool in her gloves and hat)
shopping for table linens in an open market

So begins our Out of Africa theater,
"Rick's Cafe Americaine" style.

Since we do not live in a black and white environment,
our first step was finding an inspirational interior in color
(thank you House Beautiful!)

One of the first things that caught my eye about this interior was the soothing screen color. Although warm in tone, it does not create a feeling of heat,
it is just soft, mellow and inviting.

Benjamin Moore's
Driftscape Tan 2106-50.
evokes that same feeling in tones of summer sand.

Next we need a bright print to add some
color to our subtle backdrop...

The citrus orange and raspberry shades of
Duralee 21049-394
make you feel as if you are floating
in a cool summer cocktail!

Flowers are always a nice touch for adding life to a room.

Why not add the soft glow of candlelight
to your home theater for ambient lighting?

This inexpensive Moroccan Candle Lantern in Azul blue would feel right at home in Rick's.

Because Reese is our in-house designer with eclectic flair,
has an assortment of unique items that will complete
your Casablanca inspired interior.

Because everyone is not able to enjoy a carefree summer, each week we have shared an opportunity to give
back in some small way to those in need.
We realize how lucky we are to live in a country where we can actually create beautiful spaces to watch movies about far away places, so this week, because our focus was Africa, we are showcasing the Wilson Foundation.
Established in 1997 by designer Trisha Wilson,
100% of the net profits from the sale of the
supports the foundation's mission to bring
help and hope to the lives of the
children of South Africa.

Summer in the City

Last week we ventured to the shore for a
little country coastal style. This week we are going
to offer some ideas to those who are enjoying
Summer in the City.

When my June issue of House Beautiful arrived
with it's glossy cover in ocean blue,
I knew I wanted to use this image for our design series.
Blue paint, blue sofa, blue pillows!
If your city is hot why not add a room in cool blue?
As the room above proves...

Yes, you can paint small spaces in dark colors!

So why not a cozy library or reading room
to dive into your summer reading.
Let's get started on our city style!

House Beautiful's room is painted in
Farrow & Ball's Hague Blue,
we decided to go a little lighter.

Blue Danube by Benjamin Moore, even the name is perfect!

The ceiling of our inspiration room is covered in a
Michael S. Smith fabric but we decided to keep
with our summer scheme and pair our blue room
with a crisp lattice...

For lighting, how about this beautiful
lamp from Bunny Williams Home.
Layering darker blues in your scheme like those on the
add a sense of depth to the space,
like delving deeper into the ocean.

Now, how about something from the
kitchen while you relax...

The soft fern fronds of the elegant
New York Botanical Gardens dinnerware
are similar in feel to the underwater plants
of the ocean floor and add a
touch of green to our blue room.
Plus purchasing these beauties help support the NYBG
a win, win!

For those (like me) who enjoy their
hot chocolate year round

Cocoa Set

(As one who prefers afternoon tea,
Reese says this works for her too!)

Now, where to set our afternoon cookies?

As our description says, this classic
feels right at home next to a leather reading chair,
a great final touch to complete
our Summer in the City room.

Summertime Style

Every summer I get the urge to shake up
my interiorsyou know, make them lighter,
brighter, a little fresher. And I figure a lot
of you probably feel the same way.
With that in mind we begin ~

Summertime Style

Each blog will concentrate on one design style and
share little tips on how to add a little summertime fun
to everything from New England Traditional
to Mid-Century Modern.

First up ~ Coastal Country
because what says summer more than the
water and sand of the beach.

We love these creamy walls that ground the clear
Red, Whites and Blues of the pillows that
seem to be asking for someone to come curl up
with a good summer book.

To get the look above try a soft yellow paint like
Benjamin Moore's "You are my sunshine".
It is soft and mellow, just how you want to
feel in the summer!

A painted end table is a perfect way to lighten
the mood of a living space. Don't have one?
Pick a Saturday, pack up the family and visit a
local flea market or fair and you have a
family project for the weekend.
Kids love wandering around, poking
through stuff and family adventures
are what summertime is all about!

Add some new textiles to your room.
Stripes, checks or lattice pattern,
it doesn't matter as long as it is
BOLD!

Love this happy face!

This happy guy (Bull Artwork) knows what
country is all about!

The FEED USA 100 Bag is a patriotic way to
add to your country decor. By day,
it is the perfect tote for everything from
vegetables from your farmer's market to
towels and suntan lotion needed at the beach.
Once home, it keeps everyday clutter
organized and out of the way.
Each purchase provides 100 meals to Americans.

Finally, accessorize!
County living is all about living with
the things you love and sharing
them with those around you. If you are
just starting out, here are some of our
favorite finds to help you add a
little country fun to your home....

Fiestaware Disk Pitcher - Scarlet Red

RED

The clean lines of a Fiesta pitcher
can be mixed with almost any design style so
it is the perfect choice to add a little
country to your space.
Red not your color? Check out your local
department store for a wide
variety of color options.
RSVP Porcelain Egg Cups & Spoons, Set of 4
WHITE

Summertime is all about relaxing weekends.
No matter where you spend yours
be it city, suburbs or countryside, a leisurely
breakfast around the kitchen table
starts the day off right.
These egg cups from cheftools.com
guarantee smiling faces around your table.

Barbeque Tin Tray

BLUE

And what is more country than a bar~be~que!
Our own tray at
not only looks great at the picnic
table but can be used to add a little country
summer style to your kitchen decor.

All done?
Summertime in the country is all about
neighbors and sharing so invite a few friends
over and share your new look
over coffee and your favorite dessert,
my latest favorite ~
Raspberry Cheese Cake
