Over the River...

Thanksgiving is the biggest
family holiday of the year with my husband's
(and now my) family.
When the extended group gathers
we number well over a hundred!  Some bring a new dish
to try and others bring an old family favorite recipe.
It is a day of food, football and talk as we
catch up with events of the previous year.
This year, I have the privilege and joy of sharing
this special day with my first grandchild!
Now that I am a grandmother,
it brings a whole new meaning to
"Over the river, and through the wood..."
So in honor of tradition, we bring you
"Over the River and Through the Wood"
Maggie & Reese style!

"Over the River and Through the Wood"
By: Lydia Maria Child, 1844.

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house away!
We would not stop for doll or top,
for 'tis Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river, and through the wood-
oh! how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
as over the ground we go.

Over the river, and through the wood-
and straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
it is so hard to wait!

Over the river, and through the wood-
When Grandmother sees us come,
She will say, "O, dear, the children are here,
bring a pumpkin pie for everyone."

Over the river, and through the wood-
now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

So, whether this is the start of a new tradition for you
or your celebration be tried and true,
we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving season!
